Roundtable Discussion 2: Liberal Arts vs Personalization of Learning: a critical discussion

45 minute session

The liberal arts model in secondary education is currently under scrutiny, in light of competing demands (STEM, a focus on computational, applied thinking, the rapid development of specialised, tech-focused approaches to education, etc.) dictated by a utilitarian approach. There is no doubt that these demands shape a competing model of education, one that is no longer idealistic in nature, and that they are in turn a response to a legitimate need to re-define the competences and intellectual tools that will allow our students to understand a complex, rapidly changing world. The urgent question that educators need to face concerns the extent to which these competing models can in fact be rendered compatible by re-thinking the flexibility and inclusiveness of our curricula. This discussion will focus on both examples of hybrid curricular solutions and the educational philosophies underpinning the issue.
