45 minute session

The job market for new teachers, both nationally and internationally, is opening up and this is causing recruiting challenges for CAIS schools. In particular, our schools are finding it increasingly challenging to fill the entry-level positions that are vital to overall programming. These early-career staff members, often straight out of faculties of education, play a key role in covering classes, leading co-curriculars activities, and attending to day-to-day student life duties, particularly in boarding environments. While the name of the role differs by school (associate faculty, faculty interns, residence dons, residential assistants, in-house supply teachers, etc.), the value of the role is similar: these staff cover classes and assist with co-curricular and supervisory duties, allowing full time faculty members more time to attend to everything else that is expected in a busy CAIS school. The challenge: to a degree not seen in the last 20 years, new teachers are being wooed by international recruitment and placement companies, international schools, and large public school boards with depleted supply lists. In this competitive recruitment environment, how can CAIS schools effectively articulate the value proposition of entering independent schooling? How can these entry-level contract positions be better structured to attract millennial teachers? In this catalytic conversation we will seek to share and understand effective recruitment practices and job structures of the early-career supply teacher and student-life assistant in CAIS schools.
