International Service Learning (ISL) programs are in danger of becoming the very systems and practices they were intended to replace. Curriculum design for all three program stages (pre-departure, in field, and re-entry) are crucial if as an education industry we are going to combat misguided transactional relationships that often lead to inauthentic experiences between host communities, service providers, and visiting students. Building our collective confidence regarding best practice standards will help us continue to better equip our students and faculty to build authentic relationships and engage globally with realistic and relevant intentions.
