20 minute session

This session is based on the findings of the largest study of its kind ever conducted into the IT infrastructure and leadership structures of schools in Western Canada. All 75 large K-12 districts in British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan participated. The notion of complexity was central to this research as it examined the dynamic interplay of factors, both technical and non-technical, that determine the IT infrastructure of schools and districts. District and IT leaders were interviewed about their IT infrastructure practices, their leadership structures, and the priorities that shaped their district's infrastructure. The findings of this study reveal the current technology practices and leadership structures within Western Canadian K-12. The implications/recommendations of this research present strategies for educators to set direction for facilitating learning in an increasingly connected world. The goal of this research was to facilitate the exchange of best practices among educational leaders. Of particular interest was how these leaders manage competing priorities (such as delivering the highest possible educational outcomes, equity, conforming to legislative requirements, cybersecurity, and operating within budget constraints). This session is therefore broadly relevant, both to those directly involved in schools' educational technology, and to the leaders who oversee their organizations as a whole.
